The geriatric tortoise couple has officially made my day.

But they aren’t geriatric for tortoises! They are maybe middle aged.

When I was in Madagascar, I met some Geochelone Astrochelys radiata which were in the process of saving their species. It was a sight - and sound - to behold. I have yet to meet any other living being so enthusiastic about about their sexual intercourse. Hedgehogs are also remarkable in that departement, but tortoises are extraordinary.

On a sad note, I also saw many dead specimens. And I’ve seen photos from the 1980s and early 1990s, with lots and lots and lots of discarded shells. They were - and maybe are still - canned food, basically. Later, they were smuggled, in the thousands, and sold for crazy prices. I’m not aware of the current situation, I lost contact (or worse) to my Malagasy contacts.

I bet this guy is like the Leonardo DiCaprio of tortoises and dumps all his girlfriends as soon as they turn 60.
