Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 1)

The number of American deaths due to Covid-19 has already surpassed the number of American deaths due to the Vietnam War and the Korean War combined. In a couple of weeks, it will surpass the number of American deaths due to World War I. People celebrating and having fun on this Memorial Day are not only disrespecting the Americans that died in wars, but also all the past and future victims of this pandemic, whose suffering they are choosing to ignore.

I remind myself often that Evangelicals in the US hoped for this when supporting 45’s candidacy. It’s why they describe him as godly and enthusiastically endorse his many efforts to risk our lives to make himself look good. Every national security lapse, nuclear threat, removal of safety regulations, war, and health crisis just makes them happier with their choice.

The only thing that seems to upset them is having less money - because they need it for their church, of course.

Socialism for the rich.

I’m starting to feel about this theory the same way as when someone starts harping on the term “global warming” whenever it’s cold outside and refusing to acknowledge climate change because that’s not what it was initially called. What part of wear a mask when out in public is unclear? Nothing.

A college floormate of mine had a boyfriend who she tried to teach to make a can of soup, because he said he didn’t know how to cook. She wrote out detailed instructions on cookware, stovetop settings, opening the can, etc. If she left out anything, he would stop at that point and wait for her to return and prepare his meal for him. She thought it was her fault for missing something in her instructions. Finally, we took her aside and said, “Girl, that MF is never gonna make a can of soup. He wants to act helpless so that you will do all the work.” If it was me, he would’ve starved to death before I ever put pen to paper to write instructions that are on the :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: label.

If someone complains they don’t know the rules by now, that’s on them. If the rules, terms, or guidelines change, they can be flexible and adapt - or not. If they want to follow the example of someone who has shown again and again he’s a liar, a cheat, and unconcerned with anyone but himself, that’s on them.

Yeah, the Kawasaki syndrome like stuff made headline and changed perception. It’s still rare. Personally, I am worried about long-term effects which we know nothing about (naturally). But for our new colleague, my main worry today is that she might nor be able to fly out of a country ruled by someone who makes even the US president look reasonable in comparison, and has less developed and less available healthcare.

This must be scary as fuck. And THIS is going to leave a mark on their kids. Holy hell. I am already worrying about our kids here in Germany, where the situation is currently really, really good.

Good for Finland! If you catch the virus on your flight into the country, testing at the port of arrival isn’t going to detect that as it will probably not be strong enough in your system at that point to be detected. The Austrian system (from the article) seems, in addition to being ineffective, designed to punish nonresidents and poorer people.

If there’s one thing conspiracy theorists hate the most, it’s transparency

It’s an actual trail (18" wide or less), and I don’t know about where you are, but all outdoor recreational areas in this state are heavily used.

If walking on a crowded sidewalk without a mask is fine, why would it be a problem in a grocery store? Anyone who’s actually been outside around other people knows that you are constantly thrust into situations where you cannot maintain proper distance.

Coming up with a bunch of complicated, contradictory rules based on three month old epidemiology preprints sounds idiotic to me.

Masks or no masks. Everyone can understand that.

Anyone else think this excerpt from “The Thick Of It” is appropriate for today?

I’m not liking the current collaboration between George RR Martin and Joss Whedon. Maybe we can get a few chapters by Dr. Seuss?

Could be worse. Could be Zak Snyder’s Injustice League.

Wait, is it!?

It isn’t. If you can’t maintain proper social distancing, inside or out, then wear a mask. If wearing a mask outside your house is policy, then wear a mask. And it is always polite to wear a mask.

However, evidence doesn’t support transmission if socially distanced outside. It just doesn’t. The CDC and EUDC advice remains to wear masks when you can’t appropriately distance, and the examples include indoor activities like shopping, but there is no such advice otherwise.

Some groups of people might have trouble with complicated rules, and in that case it might be a matter of government policy to require masks at all times. In the absence of that policy, following guidelines from CDC/ECED/WHO et all should not be cause for attacks.

No new deaths in Ireland. Still 59 new cases though. Community transmission wiped out. Still some very poor actions by Ireland and they are rumbling austerity rubbish and complaining that people are better off with the covid payments than working (duh. You mean workers’ poverty is a thing?).
but there are the shower of shits on both sides of us to make our unelected government t look reasonable.
