Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 1)

It’s masculine according to the dictionary. I speak little Italian. And I’m notoriously shit at spelling etc. even in languages I do kinda speak.

Sorry. What @PsiPhiGrrrl said above. Replied too soon.

I stand corrected, and am now trying to figure out what I was apparently misremembering.

“Rona”, which is part of why I hate that cutesy word and refuse to use it, even in jest.

Portuguese also has the same problem.
And another one that for some words, the masculine one retains the original meaning, while the feminine became mostly a misogynist term, usually being used to mean bitch, whore, or something close.

For us, virus (and coronavirus) is also a masculine word, but it is not uncommon to hear “a COVID”, which takes the feminine article and refers to the pandemic, a feminine word.

Presumably the virus is in the same agreement category as women in Dyirbal:

For Gekle, one thing should be clear until that [a vaccine] is achieved: “No culture is not a solution.”

So, arena events = culture? There’s plenty of culture to be enjoyed that doesn’t involve sitting in a big space with a lot of other people. This professor reminds me of school officials who warn the public that children will be irreparably harmed if they take a year-long break from traditional, in-person classroom education.

This is not a shock at all. but now it is official:

Hey Trump! No Vaccine For You!

the term in languages other than English seems to be pandemia

In Polish it’s also pandemia - a feminine word.
On a brighter note strength(siła), and revolution(rewolucja) are also feminine words in Polish.

It didn’t have to be like this.

It’s been a while.

Now, let me first give you a heads-up on Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim: she’s one of Germany’s top science journos, working for WDR, a large state broadcaster. She also knows how to navigate Neuland, as we call the internet. Has a YouTube channel. Posts videos there. Was publicly accused by a chair of philosophy (of one of my own Alma mater ) that her videos were “a great attack on democracy” while the asshat didn’t even bother to look up her name, nor who she is. Verbatim translation: "this one journalist, Mai Ti or whatshername’. Full frontal misogyny combined with fucking ridiculous gatekeeper attitude.

Merkel quoting her is a masterpiece. Whoever wrote that speech deserves a pay rise. Not only her name-checking Ms. Nguyen-Kim twice, but also not lamenting hedonistic people herself (older, in male politicians continue doing so, singling out young people in particular), but also appealing exactly to younger generations via their Neuland affinities. And last not least this is playing into the “Neuland” meme of Merkel herself.

If you told me ten years ago I would once be happy to have this chancellor, I would have been mad at you.

Edit: typos. trouble typing.

i wish it were possible to have a vaccine so quickly, even if it helped trump’s election chances. he’s so stubbornly out of touch with reality though. it was clear it was never going to happen.

And Pfizer sleazy to play along.

for sure. in part because he’s made it loud and clear that either you play along with what he wants, or you are excluded from contracts and pilloried by him in the press.

tik-tok comes to mind, but so do all of the no-bid contracts for the wall. it’s easy to bully companies when you can’t be prosecuted for wrong doing and when your own party refuses to hold you accountable.

The same thing happened here. The Governor of São Paulo had promised to vaccinate the population of the State by the end of the year. Unfortunately the research institute responsible for testing and developing the vaccine has just declared that it is not yet possible to draw up a schedule for vaccination due to delays in the delivery of Chinese supplies and results of phase 3 clinical tests.
