Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 1)

Stupid and jingo-tastic:

Sure, maybe if I’m in one of the tiny handful of countries worse-affected (and worse-run) than the UK. Otherwise, I expect I’d rather stay where I was.

That’s willful endangerment of life, at minimum. A felony.

Remember all the urban myths of people stabbing people with HIV-infected needles in dark movie theaters? You probably thought that was foolish because people who would do that didn’t exist…

That death cult sure is escalating quickly.

More on the case for ubiquitous masks:

First, the authors argue that the accepted science about aerosol transmission of respiratory viruses (exhaled fluids that can hang for more than a few seconds in the air) is based on experiments from the 1930s and is simply outdated. Basically the conceptual distinction between big particles that fall rapidly to the ground because of gravity and aerosols that persist in the air is based on 80 year technology that simply couldn’t detect a lot of very small particles.

The authors use an analog or perhaps better to say an illustrative comparison about cigarette smoke. If you’re close enough that you can smell the tobacco smoke from someone smoking a cigarette you’re probably close enough to be inhaling aerosolized COVID virus.

Or farts. If they can get through a layer of cotton weave and another of denim, and you can still smell them…that’s compounds that have reached your nose.

ETA: Edited for precise definition. Nonetheless, the smell is still a physical process.

The smell is caused mostly by volatile sulfur compounds (like hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan), not particulates:

Believe it or not, that was studied. Over worries that farts could contaminate an OR. Turns out that cloth (undergarments, pants, etc) filter out the “biological contaminants” sufficiently that a fart from a clothed person is essentially sterile. Still gross, though! That study is probably somewhat applicable to the use of masks, now that I think about it!
