The Norwegian health directorate recommended against closing schools, on the basis that the children’s environment could be better controlled at school than at home. Their advice was overruled by the (Conservative) government, and schools were closed until late spring, but during the closure the under-19 infection rate was actually worse than in Sweden where schools remained open. (I’m not sure what if any definitive conclusions one can draw from that, of course.)

Fauci: I beg you, sir. Americans are being infected by the millions. You can save untold numbers of lives—including the lives of your voter base—by setting an example and wearing a mask.

Trump: Won’t it make me look like a pussy?

Fauci: Quite the opposite, sir! Here is a fine selection of masks from our… uh… Alpha Male™ collection! Here, try on this… uh… “Dark Black” model!

Trump: Huh, it actually looks kind of cool. Look at me, I’m the Lone Ranger!

Aide: But didn’t the Lone Ranger wear a mask that covered his—

[Fauci delivers a quick kick to Aide’s shin]

Aide: —eyOW!

Fauci: VERY “Lone Ranger,” sir.

Covid and immigrant communities

Helsingin Sanomat’s editorial page takes a stand on the question of migrant communities and coronavirus.

There is evidence from across the world that the pandemic has hit ethnic minority groups and low-income people much harder than others.

The paper says authorities have to investigate the link in Finland too, citing an outbreak at an Espoo reception centre and the prevalence of migrants in vulnerable frontline work.

Authorities need to ensure that nobody feels compelled to put themselves at risk to go to work, says HS.

HS also cites the experience of Swedes of Finnish origin, who have had significantly worse outcomes as Finland’s western neighbour grapples with the disease.

Anna, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation from her current employer, said she was more disturbed by the attitude at her hometown hospital. Because her job requires frequent intubations and extubations, which are a known risk for spreading disease, she asked for an N95 mask as soon as she returned to work in Lubbock. But, she says, the infection control nurse in charge refused, telling her, “I know you saw what you saw, but this is not New York.”

So this is the bar they are setting for a prospective Covid-19 vaccine. 50%. Literally 1/2 of the people who think they have immunity will not. By design. 50% efficacy would make this the least effective vaccine in the US stockpile. (BCG actually has a lower conversion rate, but is not used in the US, largely for that reason.) I guess this is what was meant when they said “it may not be safe or effective.”

“What we’re doing is wringing the inefficiency out of the development process to make the development side faster to get to a safe and effective vaccine,” Azar said Sunday. “And at the same time, we’re going to scale up commercial-sized manufacturing to produce hundreds of millions of doses at risk. They may not pan out. They might not prove to be safe and effective, but we’ll have it so we can begin administration right away.”

Yeah, I am somehow not reassured.
