“The current version was completed in late May, and already the organization has fielded nearly 700 requests for the document, and not just from roller derby leagues. Among those asking for the guidelines are the Edinburgh Racqueteers badminton group, the Cleveland Catholic Youth Organization, Canada Basketball, and the Tasmanian State government in Australia.”
The Republicans have always wanted to kill the CDC as it has always been an example of unimpeachable competence and obviously critical governmental function. They’re winning.
Texas finally has a mask mandate. The new executive order provides for
1st violation of mask mandate is a warning, further violations a fine of $250
Gives mayors and county judges the ability to restrict all outdoor gatherings of over 10 people (I expect announcements of this for Harris, Travis, and Bexar counties by eob)
Oh. I forgot to add- how many people have died or been permanently injured because our governor bowed to political pressure and killed the local ordinances providing fines for not wearing a mask?
And now he’s had to reverse himself. I’m grateful for the mandate. Sickened by how long it took.
That’s not a complete characterization of what happened. Clark has been screwing up throughout the crisis, and he tried to throw the director general of public health (who is admired in NZ the way Fauci is admired in the US) under the bus for it. In an election year.
Two well done vlogs by doctors dealing w COVID patients:
With apologies for any previous posting upthread. This post is #1576.
That’s a lot posts.
Thanks to all health care workers, from docs to nurses to janitors to respiratory therapists, to the people in the labs doing swab testing, research on the virus, and more. I am reminded every day that no matter how regrettably stupid some of my own countrymen are here in the States, there are people who truly are working worldwide, together, to get us through this pandemic.
It’s one thing for the Gubner to order mask-wearin’ and a whole nuther thing getting enforcement, majority compliance, and the unhinged to give a hoot about their fellow human beings.
I’m far enough from Austin (~20 miles, but still in metro-area) that I get a big ol’ face-full of that not-caring almost every day.
We are truly on the “Ameristan” trajectory Neal Stephenson so deftly illustrated in Fall; or, Dodge in Hell unless we can put a stop to the politicization and devaluation of fact-based, evidence-based public health policy.
I’m with you. There’s no excuse for how bad it’s gone wrong here.
The man must see himself as walking some kinda tightrope. Doesn’t want the 2A crazies invading the state house like they did in Lansing,
I saw that, involving a children’s hospital in Texas. I am assuming (dangerous) that there are open beds in PICU’s that can be used, so use them. Seems dangerous, but that speaks to the issue.
I know that the Secret Service agents getting exposed to the virus at the Tulsa rally (and dozens getting quarantined as a result) is old news now, but I recently heard a great metaphor I had to share:
Everyone knows that the agents tasked with protecting the president are supposed to be prepared to jump in front of a bullet, if necessary, which is especially noble since they don’t even know who the president may be when they start out their careers. But you really got to feel for them lately because regardless of the politics or party of any given president, there’s generally an understanding that he or she won’t be walking around playing fucking Russian roulette.
