As an American I absolutely agree with that!
You make an important point, how there is this whole mythology within the police forces everywhere: “we have to lie, because we know what is right and those liberal pussies have no idea how hard it is!” Especially in the late 1970s and throughout the entire 1980s, this attitude was glorified by vigilante novels and movies, even if the glorification was a boomerang of what the author intended.*
There does seem to be a deep-seated cognitive dissonance, that cops feel that as the ones charged with upholding the law, they are “forced” into breaking the law themselves. And that lets the really bad apples stay in the basket and pass the rot on, ruining the whole bunch as the rot spreads.
*Similar to what I recall one director saying, that it is almost impossible to make an anti-war movie, because the cinema by its very nature of being on screen makes everything glamourous.
