Fun Fact: this is the first time Disneyland has been closed for more than 24 hours since the park first opened in 1955.
“Turns out, it WAS a small world after all…”
If Disney stops paying its cast members, it will be a rough time trying to restaff and train a whole herd of new talent from scratch once the existing employees scatter to the four winds. Those jobs ain’t just waiting tables.
They have a lot of experience training large numbers of people in relatively short order. The number of cast members varies seasonally, so they’re used to hiring and training hundreds of “cast members” at a time.

Is that right? I seem to recall that, in the early 1970s, during the off season, Disneyland was typically closed Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
Seems you’re mostly correct, they were closed Mondays and Tuesdays in the off season for many years. I guess I should have specified that this is the first unscheduled closure to last more than a day and apparently(?) the first closure of any kind to last longer than 48 hours.
I wonder if their plan is to furlough everyone and help them apply for unemployment. Using the new enhanced benefits that were just made law. They could be using the April date as a way to get to when those new processes are able to kick in.
At least, that’s the optimistic thought.
Alternatively, they’re probably reading through the law fervorously trying to determine how else they can use it to not be on the hook for all the pay while not bringing in any money.
Unprecedented territory for sure. On Monday March 16 when they sent all the office type people home they had them take thousands of dollars of computer equipment with them so that everyone could get set up to work from home. Normally the security folks at the gate need to confirm that people have clearance to take expensive property off site, but since everyone was doing it that day they didn’t/couldn’t check. But know what they DID keep an eye out for? Cast members taking rolls of toilet paper home with them.
Speaking as a person who has a roommate working at Disneyland and a close friend that performs at Disney World … Thank effing god.
Right now in Shanghai,
“Foreign friends” are now ban for entering restaurant.
Only Chinese national can come in!
Disney may want to get inspired!
About time. I didn’t realize they were still open. Both states issued shelter in place mandates quite a while ago right?
From the main post:
Disneyland closed to guests March 14, WDW on March 15. I believe the first California Statewide shelter in place order was issued on March 19.
I just checked and as of today Florida still does not have a mandatory statewide shelter in place order in effect, but some local counties and municipalities such as Orlando do have their own shelter in place restrictions.
Now I want to see photos of this furry boot camp.
But the toilet paper will just sit there, going stale. Might as well let the employees have a bonus.
During those closures, Disneyland rented itself out for private parties. When I worked for IT&T, they once rented the place for an employee fun day. There were no lines for rides.
Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties in Florida DO have a shelter in place order. There’s still some traffic, but 6 lane highways with just a few cars on them are nice. I’m not a big fan of the Rat that ate Orlando", So I’m fairly happy that my nearly two hour commute to Kissimmee is down to an hour and ten minutes…
