my father and i raised many watermelon crops on a 5 acre sand hill on my family’s lower pasture. the summer sweet is a tasty melon but it always had a low rate of germination for us and while the vines were fairly prolific as vines they never produced many melons.

on the whole i’m partial to jubilee for a red melon and desert king for a yellow melon. tasty fruit, heavily productive vines, and a rind thick enough to tolerate handling but thin enough not to dominate the heart of the melon.
