The airforce was interested in a cheaper alternative to the f15 eagle, so it solicited proposals for what eventually became the f16 fighting falcon . However, the navy took an interest in the plane that “lost” to the f16-- the YF17. Eventually, that plane became the basis for the f/a-18 hornet. At some point, NASA (specifically [Dryden Armstrong] (Armstrong Flight Research Center - NASA) )became involved in solving some aeronautical issues.

NASA has a few fighter jets that it uses for it’s own purposes–training, observing more interesting aircraft, defending the planet against UFOs, doing aeronautical experiments…
