Crazy road rager stopped with a grappler

I was thinking more Apache Junction, but yeah; we have a decent percentage of crazies in Mesa, unfortunately. :frowning:

I wouldn’t count on that. Here’s the downside of police response to vehicle rammings at protests, along with past examples of “bad apples” who had no problem ignoring the old policy:

Nah, polarized hull plating is a better tech match.

The hard part will be passing the test at the Vulcan Driving Academy.

Now I’m imagining teenagers at the DMV going through some Kobayashi Maru scenario. There would be a far fewer student drivers on the road!

If only the crazy lady had a grappler she could have quickly determined that was not her husband trying to get away.

I love how there was no explanation needed as to why the husband was trying to get away. Somehow I suspect this wasn’t the first time people have tried to get away from her.

Funny thing, I came across a couple of YouTube clips of this thing in action in training, as well as real world. It’s amazing for sure. Blew my mind.
However…
In their pitch reel they show and claim that this device is safely bring a vehicle to safe and controlled stop. In other clips though, I cringed when I saw that thing in action. I know we’re not supposed to feel bad for villains and charlatans, but this thing looked horrific. They use the word controlled in ways I don’t.
It’s just a matter of time before someone gets crushed when this safe and controlled stop results in a high speed rollover.

With out clicking on each one - aren’t they shooting INTO a moving car. Not shooting FROM a moving car.

Shooting from a moving car would be incredibly reckless. I am sure it happens, but I think the couple time’s I’ve seen that happen was when they were taking fire and returned fire through the windshield. It certainly isn’t common nor something I would consider as likely in the post I was replying too.

But yes, there is an issue about cops being too eager to shoot into a car. I suppose some might be warranted as the driver IS trying to mow down a cop. But like in KC some white teen was having some sort of mental crisis and they shot up his van backing out of driveway.

In the same way that they describe many of their weapons as “less lethal”, this thing is probably “more controlled” than their alternative vehicle stopping tools: spike strips, caltrops, and the PIT maneuver. Stopping a car is hard, and this may be one of the least awful ways to do it.

I still like the Finnish system, though:

Ah, a rare Narcedes sighting. This is about the time of their annual transit through the Gulf of Bothnia, so story checks out.

Wow, that’s wild. Thank you for sharing, I was dying to know the mechanical details of how this actually works. The design is deviously simple- not a harpoon like people are imagining. It just lays out the strap on arms in a way that will get wound up in the wheel of the other car. Very clever.

There’s also a significant cost savings with these things: the old maneuver of spinning the perp’s car by contact results in a lot of body damage, axle realignments, etc. This Grapple saves probably $10,000 per use.

Or shooting.
