Dead Celebrity (Part 1)

He really hung on for a long time before finally succumbing.

I get the feeling that Dick Cheney won’t be treated like William Barnes, though:

Came here to post this, and, damn that sucks. To die at 54 really drives home just how young they all were when they hit it big.

It’s also sad that their masterful debut album is so damn hard to find because of the various lawsuits surrounding it. I remember reading all the sampling was done with old-school razor and tape, nothing digital.

Ok, so much of this stuff certainly used to be less than, shall we say, ‘PC’ but the man was a genius, legendary illustrator. Several generations of kids were sucked into his manic, detailed Bash Street scenes.

Didn’t they release all their albums for free a few years back? I forget what their rationale was, but I seem to remember grabbing them all then when it was sanctioned by the band. I thought their first was in that batch, too.

By a sad coincidence the process for getting the samples cleared for re-issue was recently completed.

The album had been stuck in limbo for decades because of its use of unauthorized samples. Then once it could be made available, negotiations between the group and the label broke down because of royalties disputes.

I guess these things finally got worked out since it will finally be available on streaming services in March. (Which I didn’t know until now.)

I didn’t know Huey was still alive. Even if you’ve never listened to him, you’ve heard lots of people influenced by him.
