Idir, a national treasure in his native Algeria.
The style of his music, with lone vocals and acoustic guitar, championed the sounds of Kabyle music, and as such he was widely considered an ambassador of the Kabyle culture.

Sad to say I didnât know his music. Iâll rectify that now.
The Kabyle have often been erased, in France they are called beurs and as the first president of independent Algeria said âwe are all Arabs, Arabs, Arabsâ. When clearly they are not. I remember when France won the world Cup in â98 the Algerian papers ran an âAlgerian captains world Cup winnersâ, a week after they made public signage in Zizouâ s family tongue illegal.
Kabyle are very diverse by the way, they come in all colours. The Mediterranean coast is African and European and Middle Eastern and mixed up forever.
