Dead Florida woman bequeathed her home and money to her cats

They’ll find someone. Trustees are allowed to be paid for their work from the trust. Someone will do it. It might not be anyone connected to the deceased at all. But they’d find someone.

For your hypothetical there probably wouldn’t be a trustee to be found. But for any substantial trust you could find a corporate trustee. Many banks can provide this.

To be fair, it was like 40+ years ago and I don’t know what state it was in. According to the story she managed to take advantage of some sort of loophole I think involving one of those insane laws that’s just so old nobody remembers it even though it’s technically still on the books. She did say that afterwards, they changed things so you couldn’t get away with it anymore, but at that point the damage had been done, so to speak.

Given what I remember of tthat friend’s family, though, it absolutely sounds like something a relative would come up with- Lot of crazy, lots of artists, lots of PhDs. My friend turned down a full ride to a couple different ivy league schools just so she could go to college on the other side of the country and get away from them.
