Debt affects everyone in different ways. For some people it’s poor choices, others bad luck, accidents, poverty, opportunity… the list goes on. The one thing I noticed is that no matter how much debt a person has, not always, but most often, they are ashamed of it. That’s what this is largely about–addressing that stigma that debt is something we should be ashamed of, because it contributes to the power of the debt itself. The people who agreed to be a part of this project know that their debts will be public, they signed a waiver. I think it’s a very brave move and I applaud every one of them.

There is nothing about August Golden’s photo or story that does not seem like something right out of Portlandia.
