What’s really interesting is how authors writing about heterosexual relationships (courting, “casual references to ‘my boyfriend,’” flirting scenes, etc.) are never accused of pandering to heterosexuals and their agenda.

Good point. And you can have a situation where a writer might create a situation/character that’s totally non contrived and, for that writer, quite natural, yet might be considered by someone else to be pandering to “those other people” because, to that person, the situation/character is not natural or perhaps makes that person feel uncomfortable.
