Can an average user logged in as an admin user click the Finder dock icon, enter cmd-option-G (or use the Go->Go to Folder menu), then enter “/etc” in the dialog, click the ‘Go’ button, double-click ‘hosts’ in the Finder, edit the file in TextEdit as they see fit, then hit save and enter their password to save and be done?
With the info we have, maybe /etc/hosts should be deferred since inadvertently messing that up could be a pain to fix?
Maybe other things are better to sort out relating to the browser before messing around with etc files, though?
Do you want to see the changes, you time-travelers from the future-time when everything is back to normal, and the thread has hit 800K and is the only thread on the forum?
Should the handling a average user need to do to even be able to edit hers/his hosts file be enough warning? Besides that, define a average user? And if somebody managed to get there on a mac, isn’t it easy to talk about backup and replacing the file?
And is indeed chgoliz not able to be just honest about her boundaries? Does that not make somebody strong and knowledgeable?
Maybe my world is a bit small with nerds and knowledgeable people around? Sorry, but please do you mind to not shoot me for that?
Do I love to educate, but only forget sometimes who’s the audience?
Wasn’t I just answering @stynx on the existence of /etc/hosts in osX? Doesn’t she do some domain blacklisting there, though didn’t we all agree that was likely not the issue?
Did you just retract your post?
@All: What the heck is going on? Do we need to make a “no tech support in the questions thread” rule?
