Case in point of why I don’t read Dilbert. I didn’t think my opinion of that guy could get worse. But oh yes it can
Empathy. It’s a thing. And the first step is listening to the perspectives of people who live different lives.

He has a long history of transphobia. He’s just stealing from himself here.
1991:
Dilbert is the Cathy of Mallard Fillmore’s.
The sad part is, the top right one is real and they don’t even realize it. Upon transitioning I was immediately fired for it, then got paid less than all my coworkers at every job since.
speaking of sockpuppets… reading some of the comments i can’t help but wonder if adams walks amongst us even now…
Read more about him. The man is a shitstain on humanity and if you can still enjoy his comics after learning who writes them, then I weep for you.
I’m also an engineer and a trans person. Does that make my opinion on his comic worth double yours, since that’s the game we seem to be playing here?
Planned Chaos. Anyone who defends this guy is suspect.
Dilbert is still a thing?
I agree, they have no idea.
I couldn’t even get a local job interview after I transitioned. I had a few for jobs in relatively nearby bigger cities, who would then turn me down because I didn’t live nearby (Newcastle is an hours drive away from Carlisle at best, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh are more like 2-3 hours.). Local jobs didn’t even acknowledge my existence.
He’s also just so dated. He’s writing about work experiences and conditions that he experienced about 40 years ago.
He has no idea what the current work environment is like. What the workforce looks like now.
Please explain how the cartoon’s ‘jokes’ are positive.
If only technical people were the only ones guilty of this. It’s a problem that is far too common. People who happened to luck out running a business, celebrities, musicians, people in the “soft” sciences…all seem capable of falling prey to the same thing in addition to those in more “hard” tech/science. I happen to know a few personally in that last group that pretty much lump everyone with even cursory knowledge of technology of any kind as “on the spectrum”, as an example, even if they have no actual relevant experience in diagnosing such things - they “had a class on it”.
Adams is a standout case in this, for sure. I knew something was going wildly off the rails with him when he started taking on evolution in the mid-00s. That all this other stuff has followed surprises me not at all.
Yes, this. I think he’s gone on to say that he geared Dilbert to cash in, but that he identifies more with Catbert than the engineers.
Ghod, I hate this strip. Bad writing, worse art. It’s like he drops string on the ground and xeroxes it (to cite Bill Griffith on “Cathy”).
Yes, this. He’s had his moment in the sun and that was long ago. I think I went through nearly the same arc as you. Whatever happened to Doctor Fun, by the way? Same era - hopefully, he did not turn out as awful as Adams. I’m afraid to look…
I’m not the arbiter, but I would kind of like to live in the world where this was, indeed, the case. At least until the power dynamics even out a bit…
“Oh no, not this shit again?”
Well I’m sure as shit tired to the point of exhaustion of having my life downplayed by assholes who don’t care what happens to others, but you’re right, I have absolutely no idea what it’s like living as a mediocre white dude. It sounds awful.
The problem is this…
Right wingers have only one joke, and it wasn’t funny the first time. Now that we have heard it tens of thousands of times (and I’m low balling that figure) maybe it is well past time to retire it.
Stewart Lee would be far less charitable than I am being
They find “humor” in hurting others. We need to call them out on that, because it’s not funny and it never was. It’s just bullying for adults…
