Dropping Dropbox - what's a replacement?

Thats because it does seem silly, and a bit over dramatic.

I’ve been using OneDrive for documents and photos. I’m not super happy with the online interface, but works just fine for syncing between two computers. Compared to Dropbox, I find it runs a little slower, but it’s good enough for me. One thing I had issues with is the new Windows 8 app really, really dislikes keeping local copies of everything, which caused problems when it started removing copies of my game saves to save a few GBs on my TB drive … thanks. I’d rather use Dropbox, but OneDrive had better pricing on more storage.

I turned to BitorrentSync when I set up my media center PC and wanted a way of transfering 300 GB of music and movies between it and my desktop. I found setting it up a bit of a pain, but it works great now that everything is running and the files have finished copying over. I found transfering some files to my tablet a snap, too, but I’m not quite clear on how to remove them properly from my tablet without removing them from my other computers. Having to have both computers on to keep them in sync is a bit of a downer, but as long as I remember to boot them both up at the same time once a week or so, it’s good enough.

For what its worth, I use google drive, but I use an add-on encryption program called ā€œboxcryptorā€ to keep it secure and private. The free version of boxcryptor will just encrypt the data, but leave the file names and directory structure intact. For a couple of extra bucks, you can get it to encrypt all of that, too.

I’ve always had issues with Box actually working. The other deal breaker is that it installs on the Mac with a space in the file path which breaks all kinds of things. The egregious issue is that this was raised as a bug / feature request over 3 years ago and Product management has refused to fix it.

a bit over dramatic.

Let’s see… ignoring dire, specific threats that led to thousands of deaths… war on false premises… lies leading to more deaths/suffering… torture… torture in our names that make the world despise us… mass, suspiciousness surveillance, loss of much moral authority… loss of international respect… the death of what’s left of some civil rights… world made more dangerous for U.S. citizens… more hatred… more children suffering, maimed for life, death, mass death, white phosphorus, melting skin, US Constitution trashed like shit paper…

Wait… what were we talking about? Oh, yeah… overdramatic response… right…

Younited from finnish company F-Secure offers a decent price for a 200GB package. Their reasonably big on privacy (not end-to-end encrypted), and No Such Agency will get you at the Finnish servers. Wuala in Switzerland is more expensive, but with actual end-to-end encryption!

Yep, I am a DropBox dropout too. Been trying https://spideroak.com/ for few weeks.

OwnCloud, as far as I know, is the only Dropbox replacement that you fully own and control.

It also replaces the cloud-based syncing of your Notes apps, Calendar apps, Reminder and To-Do apps, and Contact apps through WebDAV, CalDAV, and CardDAV services. I’m also looking at serving my mp3s through OwnCloud.

If you don’t want to host your own OwnCloud you can work through a trusted hosting provider that offers it. For example, Mayfirst.org offers unlimited OwnCloud accounts at share.mayfirst.org with each hosting order. You still have to trust someone else with your data, but having met and worked with the folks at MayFirst I now trust them.

Disclosure: the tech co-op I work in, Glocal.coop, offers services where we help groups move from corporate clouds to OwnCloud.

This is insane!Ā  It’s only a matter of time until we find out these alternatives to dropbox are kiddie porn loving, gay marriage opposing, anti-choice republicans who hate cats.

Seinfeld saw this a long time ago with ā€˜The Couch’ episode.

The UI was a very pleasant surprise… I was not expecting that level of polish.

Assuming the reason to forego using Dropbox is a concern over privacy, rather than specifically as a political boycott, may I suggest something like Boxcryptor or Safemonk?

Accellion is a great alternative to Dropbox - many leading enterprise customers around the globe rely on Accellion secure file sharing and collaboration solutions.

I’ve been happy with Google Drive. The integration with Google Docs, Gmail, Google Calendar, and other Google products is very good. And they just cut their prices by two-thirds.

We have a pretty unique cloud storage offer based on a P2P network. Contribute cheap local drive space for free cloud storage. www.symform.com

Dropbox is not enterprise ready. Accellion is an enterprise Dropbox alternative. http://www.accellion.com/blog/2013/10/dropbox-compromised-again

First, this is not a boycott. Mark stated his reason for leaving dropbox and asked for help replacing it. There was no advocacy in his post. You are free to ignore his actions.

Second, we all absolutely have the right to avoid a company if we don’t like its management, or its policies towards its workers, or the color of its logo, or any other reason, like maybe it hired a war criminal. That doesn’t mean we have modern entitlement issues. It means we are a free people (mostly).

Lastly, I don’t know of a boycott that actually put a company out of business. (Cue the internet correction squad.) The purpose of a boycott is to express dissatification with a company in an effort to bring about change, not destroy it, although I can understand why you might think that, since we do live in the era of instant furious outrage over everything.

NSA supporter Condoleezza Rice joining board of directors of dropbox is enough for me to switch to JottaCloud.

I think Wuala is pretty cool; they are Swiss and take security seriously. They are also currently owned by LaCie, which gives them some financial stability.
