It would have been nice if Nielsen had been treated better in life, Disney wasn’t interested enough to keep him on staff; he died in poverty, after giving the world such marvelous illustrations, distinctive and like no other’s.

Have you read Once Upon a Winter’s Night by Dennis McKiernan? It’s, in my opinion, an excellent retelling of this fairytale (and the first in a series of “re-expanded” tales).
I haven’t yet, but might get it from the library.
