Nobody here has asked a very important question: was he doing algebra correctly? I mean, what if you glanced at what your neighbor on a flight was writing and saw that he was not solving for all the roots of a quadratic equation, or (shudder) failing to except cases where the denominator would be 0? Wouldn’t you want to alert the authorities?

Yeah, absolutely the writing played a key role - it was what confirmed in her mind his Middle Easternness (and thus his Musimness). His brownness, strictly speaking, wasn’t even necessary - as the people kicked off flights simply for possessing non-western scripts can attest.
I just have a hard time getting over this nonsense, the chains of faulty assumptions people like this woman make - and that so many people around them just go along with it. Because unlike some members of my own family (who actually are Muslim), I don’t personally have to deal with this on a regular basis.

This particular instance probably has more to do with a lack of education than erosion of civil rights. It’s the harvest of decades filling the curriculum with anti-science and us-centric bullshit like creationism and Washingtons grandmothers maiden name. Breeds idiots who can’t point out Saudi-Arabia on a map or differentiate arabic from algebra but see evil bogey-muslims behind every corner.

Totally! And, of course, the world has plenty of examples of non-brown Muslims. So if “Muslim” is what one is irrationally afraid of, going by looks us a sure way to be wrong one way or the other.

Meh, I get far less border-crossing crap than a lot of people I know. A relative of mine has a best friend who is third-generation Japanese-Canadian. When they drive to the States together, the friend always gets hassled, while my immigrant-but-blonde (bottled blonde, but convincingly so) relative sails through.

There’s a bit of it, at least in the full article. I read some of the comments (because I’m a bit of a masochist) and that certainly shows up there. I wasn’t too far down when I ran into one of the standard posts telling the poster’s own story about being strip searched and publicly thanking them for it. That was really more than enough for me.
