El Cajon police say unarmed black man pointed vape at officer before he was shot to death

Please, can you and @LearnedCoward spin the gun discussion into a different thread.

What? I think you need to actually look at reality instead of listening to Fox talking points.

Accusing someone you disagree with of parroting fox talking points is the new Godwin.

“Working class people of all colors must unite against the
exploitative, oppressive ruling class. Let me emphasize again — we
believe our fight is a class struggle, not a race struggle.” — Bobby
Seale

“By 1968, the (Black Panther) Party dropped its wholesale attacks against whites and began to emphasize more of a class analysis of society. Its emphasis on Marxist–Leninist doctrine and its repeated espousal of Maoist statements signaled the group’s transition from a revolutionary nationalist to a revolutionary internationalist movement. Every Party member had to study Mao
Tse-tung’s “Little Red Book” to advance his or her knowledge of peoples’ struggle and the revolutionary process” Curtis Austin, “Up Against the Wall: Violence in the Making and Unmaking of the Black Panther Party”

You’re like my mom yelling a me for something I did two days ago.

I agree, mainly because there’s already a thread devoted to discussion and Q&As on firearms history, mechanics, and culture.

ETA— To be clear: it’s a discussion, not a debate thread. Its sole function is to elucidate the world of firearms.

I didn’t know we were still having a gun discussion. I asked a question, and you answered it.

So much for all your highbrow Marxist ways, just use me up and then you walk away

As if calling everyone you disagree with a marxist as an insult is much better. Fox News is a partisan organization and they tend to distort the truth.

And the panther quotes/links have what to do with Black Lives Matter, exactly? They are clearly not a marxist organization. Class tends to take something of a back seat to race (though not entirely). Their focus is much more on identity politics, while aligned with the left, those who focus on that and those who are marxist/socialist have serious quibbles. I have not seen much of a Marxist perspective - much less a Leninist or Maoist perspective - in the BLM movement. It’s just not a part of what they’re doing, at least not in such an explicit way.

I’ve been at an anime convention. But this has been an ongoing problem, which you know. It’s not that we can’t talk about guns, it’s that almost every time there is a thread about race and racial violence visited upon the bodies of black Americans, it gets derailed with a gun discussion. Yes, have it. Debate it. It’s an important topic too. But if you guys start to have a discussion that is about guns instead of the topic at hand, can you do it in another thread?

Also, please don’t diminish me by calling me “a mom.” Yes, I am someone’s mom. Not you. I find it a bit demeaning. I try and I hope that I treat you with respect, because I think you’re a nice guy, even though we disagree on much. I’d hope if I said anything that you found hurtful, you’d ask me not to do so as well.

Yes, and if people want to debate firearms, they can do it in a thread that isn’t about police shooting our fellow citizens.

All I asked is that derailing comments be moved to another thread. But yeah, I should shut up, right.

I suspect it’s the black. And upon further thought, yep, can’t see another reason really, except the blackety BlackBlackBlack!

I mean, seriously… what is marxist aobut BLM, in general? The panthers were of a time and place, where that sort of political thinking was really global and circulating. It held a seeming promise and a real alternative to what existed in the first world. There were examples one could pull from - most of which have been revealed to be just as flawed, if not worse than the shit we have here. But to assume that any organization that has some sort of a leftist bent and talks about identity politics is “marxist” just really misses the point.

It’s easier to label that way because it helps the “othering”. Last thing you’d want to do is consider someone’s humanity and try to understand their position on things.

Unless they’re cops, of course.

To be clear I wasn’t calling you “mom”. My intent was to make an analogy of a common scenario to covey the feeling of getting “yelled” at for something I did awhile ago. I suppose another analogy is showing a dog a slipper he chewed a day ago.

A question asked and answered with out further discussion isn’t derailing. No one was debating it. I’ve made a lot of effort to avoid too many tangents, but in this case one post among 100 isn’t a derail, thus my confusion and defensiveness.

Before that I talked about the different environments between the US and UK/Australia, before that Priming, before that the questionable tactics suggested by nungesser who in hindsight decided he was the victim of some bad information. Before that the legal reasoning cops don’t shoot to wound. So I am hardly a one note tuba. More like a caterwauling bagpipe no one really wants to hear.

Okay. I’ll shut it.

I’m not suggesting that you do.

I never said you did. I don’t feel as if you heard what I actually said, so there is no reason for me to continue with the discussion.

I heard, I just disagree.

"it’s that almost every time there is a thread about race and racial violence visited upon the bodies of black Americans, it gets derailed with a gun discussion. "

I don’t feel that is a fair statement. At least by not me, though maybe I missed other people making comments in other threads? I try to keep familiar with many threads, but it is impossible to watch all of them.

The last time I can recall was in July about the woman arrested by cops in riot gear. I know there have been many similar topics since then.

So while you feel you aren’t being heard, I honestly feel like I am being singled out on this. Maybe I am being overly sensitive about it, though.
