EU’s Parliament signs off on disastrous internet law: what happens next?

That sucks.

It sounds a bit like the German CDU’s hypothetical Internet content collection society. There are reasonable concerns that shenanigans like this wouldn’t be constitutional in Germany, where the ability to dispose of one’s property according to one’s own wishes is guaranteed by the constitution as a basic right. Having a collection society pretend they own distribution rights to your stuff, collect money on that basis, and give it to third parties, all without your consent, does sound dodgy (if you or I did that it would be called “fraud”), and if this is really what the CDU is shooting for it will be interesting to see exactly how they plan to get it past the federal constitutional court.
