Every Playboy Playmate Centerfold Ever

I’m still waiting for a YouTube Video of all the articles…

Around what year did they start, er… “featuring”, the below the waist stuff? This is always the centerfold, right, so the primary picture they chose to represent the model? Striking how the earlier years are super demure in that regard. So many strategically aligned legs + objects… scrolling down… maybe around 1974-ish …? That took a while from a 1953 starting point.

Also, when was the first non-white centerfold? Jean Bell 1969?

This is cultural science! Science I tell you!

( There’s Lenna from the classic image test in November 1972! Apparently Nov 1972 was “the best selling Playboy of all time”? Wait that’s not quite true… almost…)

God Bless you Xeni

It’s sad that such a male rite of passage is going to come to an end with their no more nudes policy. I also agree with the aesthetics of the 50’s and 60’s.

Indeed, where are pubescent boys supposed to find naked pictures of women now?

I guess they’ll have to revert to the “flip through old copies of National Geographic and hope to get lucky” method. Poor lads.

Miss March 1957, Sandra Edwards is definitely a time traveler from sometime in the mid to late twenty teens.

Exactly lol (Or the Sears Catalog)

On looking through, it looks like the models kept things coy until around 1971, and gradually we start to see muff. It’s fascinating to watch pubic hair go from untamed to trimmed, then to a rectangle, then a gradually thinner strip, and by the 90s it’s gone entirely much of the time.

Personally, I think the earlier, coy shots are hugely sexier than the ultra-tan nude bodies of latter days.

Now if we could just get a complete collection of the cartoons. Shel Silverstein, Don Addis, and Gahan Wilson’s classic “Is nothing sacred?”

Yeah, I looked at the pictures.

Before I scroll past 1960. there are lots of rockabilly songs on YT that use pinups and Bettie page for the video…but i <3 this 50s amateur clip for being kinda cuuute & awkward in the “what do girls do alone and dressing” trope

Probably not too long after Larry Flynt had his eureka moment. (does a google) yep, Larry Flynt - Wikipedia (1974)

The 50’s was kind of a shit-ass decade, and yet tonight I feel almost nostalgic for it.

Given the amount of porn available on the internet this isn’t really interesting as porn.Maybe it’s good for picking time travel destinations, huh I like the standards of beauty of the late 60’s guess I better fire up the old revertulator. But then it turns out when you get there that your own version of masculinity has only ever been of interest in later 1700s Ghent.

IIRC once they started showing pubic hair, not only was it untamed, it was covered with a merkin, lest anyone see their genitals, because that would be obscene. Once models were doing away with their pubic hair entirely in the 90s and Penthouse started publishing hardcore porn, nbd apparently.

China Lee, August 1964, followed quickly by Jennifer Jackson in March 1965, the first black centerfold model. Liv Lindeland clearly showed her pubic hair in January 1971, though as far back as 1959 Ellen Stratton appeared in transparent underwear that showed nearly as much. I wonder if they got censured for that, because it didn’t happen again for eleven years!

Most jarring to me are the occasional men who appear in the early days—their hands, rather, with the rest of them just out of shot. Very different from the universal implied availability that quickly became standard.

(I may be in love with Pamela Anne Gordon, who posed for the camera ten years before I was born.)

I am ashamed to admit I scrolled past without realizing she was black. In my defense look at March 1966, Priscilla Wright. You’re gonna get skin cancer with that tan!

Wired ran an infographic on Playboy Playmate BMIs over time (based on the model’s listed height & weight) in 2009, and re-ran the piece in 2015.

This is how I converted to a left handed mouse configuration. I never looked back.
