It doesn’t smell too good, but sometimes the joint is worth the sacrifice! (Long haired iron wielder here too)
It’s hard to explain. Let’s just say I had some qualms.
If I was older, or perhaps just a little bolder, I’d file this discussion on solder in a folder.

My trick, which I still use on the rare occasions when I wear ties, is to button the shirt neck button, get the tie tied nicely, and then unbutton that top button so it’s just the tie holding it and adjust until I no longer feel choked. Looks good, and much more comfortable.
Of course my real trick is that I live and work in Hawaii where a classy aloha shirt is perfectly professional dress for nearly any occasion short of a funeral.
