Everything is fine in the UK, thanks to the Tories

Except we can’t afford to burn anything.

An average £6k energy bill is now being predicted for next year and Kwasi Kwarteng, business minister - and likely the next Chancellor - has just said that energy use is a ‘decision for individuals’ rather than the government taking action.

At this point I’m thinking they want us to riot…

The riots should lead to a popular insurgency (just erm… not armed), which then leads to communes (think ‘Free Derry’, but larger, and many of them, and more inter-connected resource wise). Yeah, I’m just dreaming here. Large scale destituent actions are definitely on the cards though.

The riots will at least have to ‘set the price’ of goods, either via appropriation or by being accompanied by a General Strike. At the very least we’d need the riots to lead to forcing a general election, although the Starmer alternative will just push us towards another set of riots a couple of years later.

I’m very ready to tie a black ribbon around a loaf of bread and hold it above my head in a supermarket, the original signal for food riots.

Let’s not forget that implementation of Brexit fully wrt SPS checks is deferred again - The minister of Brexit opportunities claims they are “an act of self harm”

Yeah, I go through those phases from time to time as well. The thing is that if rioting does start, they have no idea where it will end up; that’s the bit that terrifies them, and is why I genuinely don’t think they want that.
They haven’t got any idea how to prevent it, mind, but that’s a different problem…

Forget riots, the conditions are ideal for starting revolutions (compare with pre French Revolution and pre Russian February Revolution conditions). The Tories really do not want that to happen, far more than they don’t want to do anything that will be called socialism.

Whether they realise that before it is too late will be up to them.

It’s also worth remembering that Winston Churchill only introduced welfare in the UK to avoid revolutions. He was a Liberal at the time and they were a little less hostile to the idea than the Tories, but they weren’t socialists (Liberal-Labour had already split from them to form the Labour Party).

It amazes me how the elite class far too often can’t wrap their head about the historical notion that the kind of extreme inequality they believe they need to be happy in life can be the main cause of their undoing. It’s actually pretty easy for them to keep their class system to a pretty large degree and that’s by funding robust public programs that staves off the worst effects of extreme inequality… but more often than not, they don’t even want to do that… They really do believe that this is the “natural order” of things, I guess… Boggles my mind. They’ll do what they can get away with, if we let them. I guess going from crisis to crisis has some fucked up appeal to some in power. :woman_shrugging:

Definitely. I think we’re in a revolutionary situation in the UK, I believe we haven’t seen it this close since 1919. It’ll still start with riots though. One of the many signs that indicates to me that a massive upheaval and change is coming is a recent poll revealing that two thirds of Tory voters back temporary re-nationalisation of the energy companies Two-thirds of Tory voters back temporary nationalisation of energy firms – poll | Energy bills | The Guardian

To a great extent that was Otto von Bismarck’s goal in introducing the system of social insurance in Germany in 1889, too. And Bismarck makes Churchill look like a bleeding-heart pinko!

To be fair most of the really bad shit coming down the line is more because Britain is part of Europe rather than because it left the EU. Shit’s going down.

Not all mind, some of it is caused by the machine gun the English Conservatives have aimed at their feet. Like where is the Prime Minister during all this as misery approaches for winter? Oh I know, out of office all summer and then he fucks off to Ukraine for a PR stunt in front of the cameras that he will have fuck all to do with as his spin team tell him that one’s playing really well with their constituency which has a hard on for war and killing people and wants to look well hard like perma drunk racist Churchill. A real leader and manly man.
