As a furry that has lived the past near two years in virtual reality social spaces … Fuck the Facebook’s metaverse. Facebook’s idea of what a virtual identity is horrible. Looking at tech demos and patents they are mostly just interested in digitizing you as you are in the room as you are. Identity like names are way more complex than the facebook developers care and does not fit the marginalized very well.
(Like all new mediums furries tend to dive in head first early)
A couple of years ago Facebook famously tried to take over the world’s money. That failed epically. Why would anyone believe they can pull off “the metaverse”?
It really is something that the coolest thing a boring straight white guy like Zuck can conceive of being in virtual reality is… himself, but somehow more human-looking, standing in an open plan office space.
Christ, I have aphantasia and I can come up with cooler shit than that.
If Linden Labs had managed to build a platform with an engine that wasn’t a heaping pile of trash on fire in the middle of the ocean, they might have had a shot at a rebirth/rejuvenation of Second Life thanks to VR. Instead, it seems as though places like VR Chat and Neos are eating their lunch because I still can’t even pull 20 FPS on medium settings on the regular display of my relatively decent gaming rig.
I think there’s a decent chance DC has “Metaverse” and a thousand other uses locked down from their spat with Marvel over “Superhero”. Ways back they went with “Meta Human” and basically spun that out into Meta everything. They definitely use “Metaverse” for their multiverse.
Even if they don’t have trademarks locked down Facebook is probably about to find itself in a spat with At&t/Warner media.
The platform used in Myanmar was messenger as in many countries FB is loaded onto phones as a quasi browser. Difficult to blame Fb for private messages being sent. Maybe the richer countries should instead install a tyranny free net access for all countries so people wouldn’t have to rely on the tech giants or be punished by free thought thugs like China.
Facebook bought Occulous who were developing a VR headset thing, and promised you wouldn’t need a Facebook account to use it, but guess what?
They lied!
I know!
I do disagree with your contention that VR is exciting though. I think the idea of VR is exciting, but the reality of VR is disappointing. Just my view though.
I’ve been deep into following VTubers on Youtube and Twitch, and believe me VR and motion tracking is making noticable and significant advances in quality on practically every metric on a weekly and monthly basis.
While stuff isn’t getting much cheaper, that’s mainly due to our current tech supply chain issues. From the standpoint of code and applications, I’m watching VTubers get new features and better models and more accurate facial and motion tracking week by week.
It wasn’t simply the medium used to transmit private person-to-person messages. The NY Times and others have reported on how the official military accounts used their public pages to spread lies and disinformation, and even a report that Facebook itself commissioned agrees that they didn’t do enough to stop it. So I very much do blame Facebook for their role in the shit that went down there.
At some point the resolution will improve to where a set of VR goggles will be cheaper and easier than adding MOAR SCREENS to my workspace, which will be awesome for focused work… assuming the associated video card doesn’t double as an unholy amalgam of wind tunnel and blast furnace.
