The writer buried the real reason for the fans getting escorted from the stadium. Near the end they say displaying a sign over the wall violates stadium rules. Another issue turned racist when it was anything but.
The message was not very clear. Racism exists everywhere. The media has fanned the flames dragging our country back to the tension level of the 1960’s by sensationalizing anything that can possibly have a racist tint. (Not sure if that was an intended almost pun or not.)
Some folks look for anything that can perhaps, by some stretch of an overactive imagination, be made into a racial issue. There were two articles about some black people getting offended by cotton plants being used for decorations. One in a centerpiece at a dinner and the other with cotton stalks in glass vases to use to decorate. Folks, we all wear cotton, or sleep on cotton, or use cotton in some way. I think it is safe to say that nobody alive knows someone who picked cotton as a slave. My great grandmother was born in 1898, and her mother in 1879, and I knew them both before they passed. Neither of them knew any former slaves. I asked when I was a kid. Great grandmother was 92 or 93 when she passed. My grandmother was 20 days short of 100 when she passed. Our family is from right smack in the middle of Dixie and cotton grew all around their homesteads. I have picked some of that stuff, and bloodied my fingers doing it. I have mega-tons of respect for the men and women who picked cotton before machinery came along to do it.
We need to focus on our future and use our past to guide us. No one group is more or less equal than another. We are all responsible for our lot in life. Opportunities exist for everyone to make their lives better. My family lived in the projects of Birmingham, AL for several years. One of my siblings chose a life of addiction and lives off of the government. My other three siblings and I worked hard, some got an education (youngest has a PhD from University of Alabama), and some went the skilled trade route. With a total of five kids and a stay-at-home mother, we had nothing handed to us. For me, a weird sense of humor, set goals, and stubbornness not to live in the projects helped me keep looking for ways to do better. Now I am retired, own a home, and I am happy. I am not rich by any stretch of the imagination - except I know I have earned what I have. Even the 10 dogs and 7 parrots.
If the demonstrations about racial issues were non-violent, I would join in many of them. I approach problems calmly, logically, and with a clear goal in mind. I also know that no amount of arguing with the police will be successful. Instead, calmly addressing any issues with law enforcement takes stubbornness, determination, and a professional approach several steps above the street cop. Nothing against the police: the vast majority are good people who feel the same as the rest of us. Unfortunately, a few ruin the image of the many. Next time you are at an event, smile and wish the police a safe and pleasant day. You may even find yourself enjoying a conversation. Those men and women are people too. If we can just get the good ones to call out the ones with the bad attitudes, our costrong textuntry would be a better place. Just remember, our attitude sometimes dictates their attitude.
