They’ve still got a long way to go to beat the OG, Miss Tiggy Winkle.
It looks more like a human in pajamas wearing the sonic head with human teeth. Furries probably wouldn’t give him human teeth and did something other than what they did with his eyes.
Which raises the question: Would most furries prefer that their proportions were not constrained by their own human body, or is the fact that a furry is a human in a suit part of the joy?
If you were going to make a Sonic suit, I think one that matches his established proportions as much as possible would be preferred. Most suiters go for their own OC when they get one made, though, so I dunno how often that particular challenge has presented itself (I’m sure there are Sonic OC suits out there somewhere, and I’m sure they run the gamut from awful to inspired, but I’ve personally never bumped into one at a con). That said, furries are nothing if not inventive when it comes to cramming humans into animal shapes; faux-digitigrade legs are pretty popular for those that prefer a more animalistic appearance to their suit.
I think for most furries, the human inside the suit kind of disappears. All there is is the critter being brought to life. Ask a kid if they care about the guy inside the Pluto suit at Disney Land, for instance, and you’ll probably get a quizzical look. They’re just Pluto. The illusion is a big part of the reason why there are discreet “headless lounges” at cons, where suiters can pop their heads off or unzip their torsos and cool down without people seeing them half-dressed.
I was thinking more in terms of the artists and not fur suiters as that’s quite another thing. By and large we have a much longer tradition of drawn art than costumes and nearly any furry artist worth anything would have done a better job at this.
The problem here is the sonic design actually does look like somebody tried to make a bad mascot costume and most decent furry artist that care about this stuff would probably skipped over the desire to stick a human in it.
(In this case I do mean one that can professionally draw and I would refrain from searching for sonic on e621 … Lol)
Oh for sure, if you’re just talking about illustration, there’s flat-out zero excuse to come up with something as awful as the thing in the trailer. And I second the recommendation to not search e621 for Sonic. Or anything, really…
