additional…(godmotherfuckingdamnit!);
Little was known about the oil demand sustainability programme (ODSP) but the investigation obtained detailed information on plans to drive up the use of fossil fuel-powered cars, buses and planes in Africa and elsewhere, as rich countries increasingly switch to clean energy…
The ODSP plans to accelerate the development of supersonic air travel, which it notes uses three times more jet fuel than conventional planes, and partner with a carmaker to mass produce a cheap combustion engine vehicle. Further plans promote power ships, which use polluting heavy fuel oil or gas to provide electricity to coastal communities.
all the planned projects revealed in the investigation by the Centre for Climate Reporting and Channel 4 News involve increasing the use of oil and gas. An official said this was “one of the main objectives”.
oil demand sustainability programme…
On Cop28 coming up…
The above seems at odds with this…
Pope Francis who just released an encyclical on the environment won’t be able to make it…
“Mommy, why does it always smell like french fries near the airport?”
oh, thats actually kinda honest for a change…
Holly Boyd-Boland, vice president of corporate development at Virgin Atlantic, said the flight shows that the fuel can power existing aircraft but said the challenge is ramping up production to “get to enough volume so that we’re flying more sustainable aviation fuel every day.”
how about reducing flights for a fucking start?
Don’t hold your breath…
$5.5 BILLION … remember that next time they charge you an extra $30 or $50 dollars just to have a seat without your kneecaps in your face.
I dont.
dont fly. I dont. and I intend to keep it that way (last time was to australia 1996).
Looks like we’re going backwards when it comes to fuel specs:
So the next specification, for JP-3 (JP-2 was an experimental fuel that never got anywhere), was remarkably liberal, with a wide cut (range of distillation temperatures) and with such permissive
limits on olefins and aromatics that any refinery above the level of a Kentucky moonshiner’s pot still could convert at least half of any crude to jet fuel.

Every now and then someone rolls out the idea of refining old food fats. The energy and effort that goes into recovering and refining the stuff is not trivial. Maybe if centralized deep frying Mars bars at one large location, or something, you could get a token flight out of it every now and then.
You can make a business of refining spent oil if the inputs are reasonable, easy to collect, and the final products not too different. Safety-Kleen refines spent oil at Breslau, Ontario back into high-quality lube oil products, for example.
they always “forget” to mention that part, dont they? always.
… putting elite jet travel in direct competition with growing food
The EU, UK, US and others immediately announced contributions totalling around $400m for poor countries reeling from the impacts of climate change.
a measly $400m?!? well, they can straight go fuck themselves for such a lousy publicity-stunt!
Some discussion on EVs and mineral mining (which often happens in the global south, and includes environmental damage and sometimes the use of forced labor):
Also, I thought there was a car thread, but can’t find it, so if anyone knows where it is, and wishes to cross post, please do so!
This one?
Doing it horribly wrong.
Yes, it’s better than wasting the extra cooling energy and fresh water to carry the joules away, but I don’t think dumping all that energy into cold ocean water is a good idea.
We need to solve the problem of these data centers.
