Floods, Fires, and Heat Domes (the climate change thread) (Part 1)

Where “demands of the modern world” mean AI things nobody actually wants, but tech billionaires insist must be the future because they have nothing better to sell investors on. :disappointed:

Hurricane Beryl, which formed Saturday evening, has rapidly intensified into a major Category 4 storm and is expected to hit Barbados and the Windward Islands early Monday.

Why it matters: The storm is rewriting hurricane history. Its early formation, rapid intensification and location are all record-breaking.

Stunning stat: “Hurricane Beryl took just 42 hours to go from a tropical depression to a Category 3 storm,” according to meteorologist Sam Lillo. “This has been done 6 other times in Atlantic hurricane history. And the EARLIEST date this was achieved before was … September 1,” he posted on X.

unless there was another fast-forming monster hurricane of September 1, i believe this one mentioned would be the Labor Day, 1935 storm that destroyed Islamorada and the Flagler overseas railroad. that storm formed very quickly, took a deadly turn and hit Long Key on September 2. it was a tight, intense storm that has the record lowest pressure drop ever recorded. winds sustained at 180mph with gusts of 200mph. it came ashore with a 20ft storm surge that completely swept the islands from Long Key and lower Matecumbe up to Key Largo. 500 people were known dead, with as many as 300 never accounted for.

that Beryl has done this so soon in this season gives me cold chills of dread. this does not bode well for this season and i fear we here in the keys are in for a very big hit.

That looks like a monster! We have friends on Roatan from years of working there, and fear for them. South TX looks like it could get hit as well. For Jul 2, this is absolutely nuts. And a portent of what’s coming, sadly.

Bill Gates has claimed that artificial intelligence will be more of a help than a hindrance in achieving climate goals, despite growing concern that an increase in new datacentres could drain green energy supplies

sure bill, if you say so…

Is human intelligence & ingenuity not enough? After all, we got ourselves into this mess, which is no small feat!

Is it enough to overcome human stupidity, shortsightedness and greed seems to be the functional question here, and current indications are not encouraging.
