It’s a shame that absolutely nothing can be done because this is the just cost of the second amendment, which is sacrosanct above everything else in life.

As we all know, the Second Amendment serves an important purpose. How else would insecure dweebs be able to collect props for their action-hero fantasies?

The terrible reality is that reporters in war zones get injured and killed. The other terrible reality is that the entire United States is effectively a war zone all the time.

Can I just check I’ve got this right (I’m not American)? You can change aspects of the constitution via ‘amendments’, but once written the amendments can never be changed?
That’s an, erm, interesting, political system you’ve got there.

They can be and have, but the bar is high and the gun lobby has a lot of money to prevent it. It’s the same process as amending in the first place

Article V

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.

They can be changed or repealed by other amendments. For example, the 18th Amendment put a national prohibition on alcohol in place in 1919, and the 21st Amendment in 1933 repealed it.

On both sides of US politics the constitution is the foundational text that is considered to have formed modern America. Any change or amendment needs to be considered carefully over a long period of time. Gun deaths or corrupt presidents need due process and much political debate and legal shenanigans coming from the top down.

To think of the good of the people from the bottom up is Socialism which ‘is’ Communism and citizens need to arm themselves to protect the country against such tyranny.
