This sort of device feels like it will make a lot more sense once VR goggles have been replaced by VR glasses or contact lenses. Constantly looking for a monitor to plug into feels like a pain.
Just like the Pi400 which lies untouched underneath my TV, this is a really cool idea and intriguing form factor with almost no real world application. I guess if you carry around a tablet anyway, and there is an easy way to use it as a monitor, this would allow you to have a full-size computer in your bag in case you need it? Have portable projectors made any progress recently, or are they still unusable in normal light conditions?
But yeah, as much as it pains me to say it: just buy a laptop.
This looks like one of those unfortunate products that lives at the intersection of impressive and almost entirely uninteresting.
If I wanted to Rebel Without A Cause my client computing having a foldable module I could probably just about stash in my t-shirt sleeve would be really useful; otherwise it’s impressive that you can shove an entire 8840U, 32GB of RAM, and a TB of mass storage in there; but I’m still running around with a keyboard that looks like it was stolen from a retirement home for palm pilot accessories; a frankly penal looking trackpad; and a system that can’t be used interactively without a DP alt-mode type-c monitor or some dongles.
In a world where laptops exist, for people who need autonomous operation; and assorted mini-PCs exist if you really need to transport the computer rather than the state between different sets of peripherals, this just seems like a stunt.
Also laptop docking stations. Ever since I got one at work, I’m a convert.
If you had Chromecasting or Airplaying built in or via a small dongle, something like this could be handy in conjunction with a TV as a monitor, as a living-room or hotel-room computer.
I like the idea, however, hotel room TVs tend to be in positions that make it difficult to do sustained work. You’d still be better off and more flexible with a laptop which can also cast to the TV if necessary
I have a foldable Bluetooth keyboard for my phone that looks like this product. It’s been with me through a few phone upgrades.
Now all we need is a foldable monitor, and we’re set!
