The Times screwed up. But what this seems to be missing is balance. How many times did Palin or her team and allies rip into the NYT, directly or indirectly, with lies? I bet it’s more than I can count on my fingers.
Then there’s 45 and his “Enemy of the People” line. That preceded this editorial. If they hold the NYT responsible for this mistake, then they damn well better hold GOP candidates responsible for theirs. And that’s before we get to Fox News…
That’s what I hope the lawyers keep harping on: well, if this one instance is so bad, even though we printed a retraction right away, then how about these 500 times you did the same to us, and never admitted to the truth?
Maybe they should file a counter suit?
I mean, political speech is protected. So is the press. So if one can be hauled into court for this kind of error (which I think they sometimes should for a bad enough mistake without correction), then so can the other. Just think about how many times Palin said incorrect and damaging things during her candidacy? I mean, that’s what the incorrect editorial was about. And it was correct about Palin, just not about one link of what she actually said and an external event.
Just deport him back to Australia & be done with it.
Vastenhout said that if the investigators put so much of their argument’s weight on the Amsterdam Jewish Council, an organization around which so many misconceptions already existed, they should have been “very careful in dealing with this topic.” Instead, she said, the book based on their work is “full of errors.”
“The problem is they come out with this accusation without providing any real evidence,” Vastenhout said. “Again, a story that it’s the Jews themselves who did this, and again, the Jewish Council. It feels like we’re starting all over again.”
Dara Horn, the American author of the 2021 book “People Love Dead Jews,” an exploration of anti-Semitic attitudes, said that this story fits into a trope of Jews turning against Jews.
“There’s even a name for this in Jewish studies, called ‘Holocaust inversion,’” she said in an interview on Monday. “There’s a reason why that’s appealing to a non-Jewish audience. It makes it so you don’t have to think about your own responsibility.”
The Chairman of Keidanren (the Japanese Business Federation, which is kind of like the US Chamber of Commerce) is calling for an end to restrictions on the entry of foreign citizens to Japan, saying that closing the country off no longer makes sense now that the Omicron Variant has already become prevalent in Japan. Keidanren is very influential with the government, which is already under a lot of pressure internationally to lift restrictions. That said, I think that the lifting of restrictions will be rather slow and gradual, starting with business travelers, skilled workers and international students before tourists.

When you say that, do you mean it’s Japan’s national organization for businesses, or do you mean it’s a right-wing lobbying group to protect capitalists? Because the latter is what the US Chamber of Commerce actually is, even if individual local Chambers aren’t that political.
Keidanren is a bit center-right, but functionally it’s more like a think-tank.
And so, it begins. We better start working on that time machine.
