Ha ha, I get what they are going for. But an unintended discharge is pretty much the definition of an accident.
If the criticism is of a broken system, I am all in. There are way too many examples of it going off the rails and innocent black men being injured or killed. No argument from me on that. This just is not one of those. We need to be careful not to condemn cops for being cops, esp when one does right. I would only wish that it were not noteworthy when that actually happens.
“Accident” implies it is not anyone’s fault, it just sort of happened. Firearms do not allow for that. It is absolutely the responsibility of the gunner if that firearm discharges. "Unintended " =/= “accidental.” At least that is what I was taught, and taught my kids.
You don’t need to see any video to know he lied to a cop about his firearm going off accidentally.
Something about your attitude suggests you are not paying close enough attention to what your respondents are saying to you.
But anyway, I expect them to not be gullible when it comes to handling testimony from someone who is at minimum dangerously negligent with guns and just lied about it. (So when the cop claimed his assessment changed after viewing the video, why was it necessary to change that assessment?)
I also expect them to know about firearm care, transport, use, and that someone is lying whenever they say something like “it just went off all by itself in the direction of a child.”
Why would you regard this as an unrealistic standard to meet?
Accident means it wasnt on purpose. Accidents don’t absolve one of responsibility. Guns can go off accidentally, that doesn’t mean someone isn’t responsible. Like I said, I get what you are trying for, but it is kinda torture on the language.
The flawed system is exactly what I’m criticizing; though I can’t deign to speak for Rob, the author of the post.
That some people seem to have taken his words as some sort of ‘personal affront’ against them is just more of the exact same tone deaf justifications, misdirection and attempts at derailment that always happen whenever the subject of personal and institutionalized racism comes up.
Because he AUTOMATICALLY assumed the white man was right. That’s fucking why.
Throw in cops and guns and you have the makings of a complete shitstorm. I was just wondering (as a relative newbie here) if he had established a trollish reputation, leading to the response. Ok, I’m good.
This whole exchange started when someone asked why this specific cop was being singled out as the reason black men kneel.
Put succinctly…

So this occurred literally within walking distance of my childhood home. I haven’t lived in the area for 30 years, though, and nowadays I only visit for the occasional funeral.
Unfortunately it’s not surprising. We sold our house to a black family when I was in high school; the dentist who lived next door apparently bad-mouthed us for years. I hate to think of what they said about their new neighbors.
The rumors I heard when Rochester Hills incorporated (it had been Avon Township until sometime in the eighties) were that they didn’t want to be annexed by Pontiac (read: black people). I don’t know how true the rumor were, but it did seem to be a factor.
But this guy? Christ, what an asshole.
I’m usually on the same page as you but I don’t think the snark was necessary. Is KeithLM a known troll? I didn’t understand when Rob wrote it and I still didn’t fully grasp it until you explained it. Just the ‘kneel’ part is what I didn’t get.
This thread is not a wonderful thing. Yes I know the site tag line changed.
Man, as much as I’ll admit that there are some really scary gun owners out there (and it’s probably much worse in other parts of the country), this is why the "let’s figure out a reasonable way to solve the “guns are obviously a problem in the US” issue hits a wall.
There’s really no motivation to meet anywhere, intellectually or otherwise, with the other side of the issue if you’ve already been dismissed as a shirtless redneck who’s just looking for an excuse to kill things.
sincerely,
non-white, currently shirt wearing, buddhist, liberal, non-hunting, doesn’t have any illusion about using guns for defense, gun owning guy, who really likes the discipline and relaxation of target shooting.
(and who is currently also wearing ankle socks, I mean, that’s kinda anti-redneck eh?)
In 1997, my girl friend and I were riding my motorcycle in Mississippi. A herd of deer was blocking the road as they passed by (about 20 deer). We stopped near a driveway with a man raking his leaves. He noticed my California license plate and commented “Fuck’n Deer and Californians!” He marched off and got his shotgun out of his house…we rode off as he raised it from his porch.
His type are nothing new. Blames the world for everything…and everything needs to die!
He had a loaded firearm.
The safety was off.
It was pointed towards a person.
He was applying enough pressure on the trigger that a claimed stumble made the difference.
Since the court doesn’t have a verdicator, and a jury won’t have teeps, his intent or purpose is unknown, and I’m not sure that it matters.
Proper gun safety should always be taught by NCOs with riflebutts.
Please don’t misunderstand me. Dude clearly fired the gun on purpose. I watched the recording. But to say there is no such thing as an accidental (unintentional) discharge is kinda absurd. That’s all I was replying to there.
