As I like to remind people, “better” all depends upon what one’s goals are. And, unfortunately, “bronze-age genocidal war-king misogynist” still seems to be a lofty-sounding goal for many. If you surveyed the population, I suspect that you’d find that many more would rather have the life of a king, luxuriating in comforts by forcibly controlling others - rather than being a scientist, or any other sort of person with a life based upon reason. When people set such a low bar for themselves, they are easily co-opted.

I mean, sure, I’d like to be Bertie Wooster, but I’ll settle for enough to live on, plenty of free time and being left alone by people who think they’re important (unless anyone can swing the Wooster thing for me?).
