You’re right that mental illness doesn’t cause violence. I was being glib and meant crazy as in “living a wild life”.

The collapse of Ratners isn’t as bad as it is often made out to be.
The Ratners branded stores only accounted for 300 of the 2500 stores in the Ratners group. The Ratners group was huge with stores all over the world operating under multiple brands. In the UK the Ratners stores were rebranded under sister brands and the lowest performing ones were closed. The group was renamed as Signet a year later and has recovered and thrived since. I’ve seen it argued that he inadvertently did the company a favour by helping trim some fat.
Yes, he said something stupid, but it had more of an impact on him that his business.
I’d argue that Musk is demonstrably good at hiring good engineers and throwing money at them…and then basking in the reflected glory.
