Game dev Brianna Wu on what it's like to be forced from your home by sexist hate

That’s it??

(If that wasn’t you, sorry for the mistake and nothing I’m about to say makes sense)

No mention that the person would be inspired by Wu. Mention they might be inspired by previous people in other posts, but Wu could have been inspired by Sarkeesian. I read what you wrote. This is what you wrote, and yes, it does read like a not-so-subtle accusation against Wu. If you are curious as to why people are jumping on you, it is because you did that.

You are asking if anyone here would get out of the lynch mob and reconsider their opinions. If you look over these boards you will find that I have done all of the following: Admit I misread what someone said, be convinced by someone else’s point of view, conclude that a difference of opinion comes down to a point that we really can’t say who is right on. Yes, I step aside and reconsider my point of view, even on internet message boards.

Have you ever done this? Every time you think someone else is wrong, do you consider you might be wrong? If you are twelve others have opinions have you considered that the one with the most correct opinion isn’t you.

This place is far from an echo chamber. People who agree on some things disagree on others. I’ve argued with people back and forth for dozens of posts and then thought they were exactly right about something else.

Also, several people have already explained that we are aware that people lie and we still think that we should be believing people when they say they are in harms way. Your hypothetical was not interesting to anyone who has thought about the situation even a little, so what purpose could it have other than to make a veiled accusation?

If you genuinely thought that you were making an interesting point and had no intention of implying accusations against anyone then I’m offended for an entirely different reason: I’m offended that you think I’m so stupid to not have thought of that. I’m sorry if it seems like an interesting thought to you, but it seems like a boring, routine thought to me that I would have about everything. If you aren’t used to thinking, “Okay, what’s the risk if I’m wrong about this,” and this is your first time, then welcome to the club (although, not really, you have to think “what if I’m wrong” not “what if other people are wrong.”)

Oh the one that really chafes my bits is that I work at a big corporation and I frequently work with our corporate photography files. They’re pretty great about photographing women sometimes as supervisors/managers. However, for SOME reason, shoppers getting help are ALWAYS women. Even in a store that sells things like hardware, there will be a dude helpfully helping a woman to find her sheetrock. It drives me nuts.

I am so not going to mention the old saw about men being unable to ask for help.

I especially love the silhouetted pregnant woman.

For just pennies a day, you can help…

Times refers to them as "Gamers hostile to criticism.
Hahaha understatement of the week. First they organize a witch hunt, then when the backlash comes they attack critics and journalists (because they fight corruption, er unethical journalism, and criticizing, er lying about them is unethical).

Interesting that Brianna mentioned 8chan. These are the guys trying to come across as the reasonable mainstream of #gamergate and constantly whine about how they’re misrepresented. Yet when somebody posted a thread asking what they’re afraid will happen if they lose the fight, many said they’re afraid Social Justice Warriors will win. Wait? What? Wasn’t this fight about corruption, er “ethics”? Why are some of these reasonable guys fighting against SJWs? And who are these warriors they hate? Well, people like these:

Wait, @jennatar AND @xMattieBrice quit writing about video games ON THE SAME DAY? SJWs dropping like flies before the might of #GamerGate

So yeah, good luck convincing me and others there isn’t a misogynistic element to these #gamergate attacks.

I didn’t know where something was, so I just left the store without my sheetrock.

This is the ultimate in vacuity. What will happen if we lose? Someone else will win! (The horror!)

The recent piece by Kathi Sierra nails down a motive that actually makes sense of all of this. What they are really angry about is that a woman is getting attention that she doesn’t deserve. (I’m not even going to try to unpack what “deserve” means here)

Check out the original premise of @C11’s post. It was, “Hey, what if one of these women was lying for attention.” Naturally, the answer to that question is, “I suppose then she’d get some undeserved attention.” Hardly a catastrophic scenario worth becoming a misanthrope who assumes everyone is lying to prevent.

But a woman getting undeserved attention is the apocalypse for the people who are making these threats. They are angry that we don’t see the danger. Imagine if people listened to Anita Sarkeesian. Imagine people friended her on FaceBook and followed her on Twitter. Imagine… her winning. That’s all it is. It’s about who wins and who loses, not about any kind of consequence that spills over into real life. And somehow they don’t understand why the vast bulk of people, even the vast bulk of video game players, just don’t care about that.

I’ve thought of Sarkeesian’s videos as Feminism 102: Introduction to Feminist Criticism, using computer games. It is basic stuff, really, but she’s clear and thorough. You’d have to be a pretty thick-headed sexist to misunderstand her. Unfortunately, there are a lot of thick-headed sexists.

Early on, when Sarkeesian had published a few videos and launched a Kickstarter campaign, I saw a few women point out that everything she had said so far had been said for years by women critiquing computer games – though most acknowledged her presentation was excellent. I think the current brouhaha, ironically, demonstrates the importance of Sarkeesian’s work.
