A LEGO placemat seems like a really bad idea. It sounds like a nightmare to clean.

Perhaps if you want a permanent one you could do a clear resin encapsulation for a smooth top. Someone who knows more about resin usage could weigh in on the feasibility of that.
Personally Iād go for some fun coasters instead of entire placemats if I wanted to tackle a project like that. Wouldnt surprise me if someone was already selling things like that on Etsy or at hipster flea markets.

They are also brutally painful to step on if you are dancing on the table.
