Sounds real similar to “No offence, but…” doesn’t it?
Perfect example!
User zeebaneighba
has been banned for behavior that, frankly, I fail to understand.
- User writes message that, according to them is misconstrued to be about the OP, not the mutant they are responding to
- Moderation team explains that the community (that is you wonderful mutants) flagged their post because it was unclear, and that if they want to try again and be clear who their subject is, they are welcome to do so.
- User responds that clearly the community was instead targeting their opinion and moderators have failed in their duty to protect their post
- Moderation team explains that no, it was plainly clear that the subject of your post was wrong, that there is an easy fix, just respond again and make it clear who you are talking about,
- Rage ensues
There is a recurring type of internet denizen who, for whatever reason, seems to be unable to imagine a world where what they say is not crystal clear and obvious to everyone, and I’ve repeatedly seen this very same behavior as a result. “Everyone is wrong, everyone must be acting in bad faith because there is no way I am being unclear or have otherwise acted improperly”, even when the remedy is simple and straightforward.
I don’t get it. It baffles me every time. The moral, though, is thus:
- Text is a terrible medium to convey informal intent. The burden is on the author, not the readers, to ensure they are being properly understood as a result. The easiest way to correct this is with more speech. i.e., if you are misunderstood, explain yourself in more detail.
Sheesh.
This is because you are assuming they are acting in good faith, and that makes you a good person and a good moderator. But in many cases, they’re not acting in good faith, and the latest method of arguing with “the libs” is to pretend to be one of them and tone police/concern trol_ any arguments against the position you truly, actually hold.
i understand the concept of pre-delay on my reverb but pre-griping . . .
User Bernel
has been given a timeout for suggesting that child sexual assault victims would be less likely to be “chosen” if they were better prepared. While there is, sadly, no doubt that parents are faced with a world that requires them to prepare their children (especially their younger girls) for the evils of the world, absolutely none of that removes one iota of blame from the sexual predators who stalk them in the first place. It is never the victim’s fault.
WTAF? Glad I missed that one. FFS.
Wish I had…
This lesson was apparently insufficient for this user, so they have been upgraded to a permanent ban.
I have felt that my old policy of starting with a permanent ban and then dialing back if I really think a user might change was better than my more recent “give people 2-4 weeks and hope.”
Your more recent practice demonstrates a mistaken optimism for human nature.
A little bit of tolerance goes a long way, though; not everyone here who says something assholish on occasion* is a bonafide troll… at the same time, users who demonstrate bad faith consistently shouldn’t be given more than the requisite ‘3 strikes’ in my humble opinion.
*Hell, sometimes I’m the one who’s acting like an asshole, and I can own that.
Yeah, I’m thinking about the time I reacted angrily in a moment and as a result my post was deleted – but the number of PMs I got asking “are you OK?” showed me that I have a known track record: it was recognized as an anomaly rather than the norm.
We all hit our limit and lose our tempers from time to time; it’s a human failing we all have… for instance, I can own it that the last time I was sanctioned, about two years ago, I fully deserved the timeout I was given because I lost my temper and lashed out. I sucked it up and endeavored to ‘learn the lesson.’
Indeed, I think that’s an informal metric that the regular community here utilizes…
User Zencat was suspended for finding the need to be rude about an error said user clearly knew we had already been notified of.
I believe it is obvious that we appreciate being kindly told when we have made simple errors. It is also clear we will expel people who need to be assholes.
It’s the “need” part that always gets ya
That feeling when a bunch of your replies disappear after the mods go after the shitposts you replied to
Been there. It’s a good kind of pain, though. The kind that reminds you to not do that no more. Now if it would just stick!
User DeLoshming
has been banned for, first, downplaying force-feeding bodily fluids to children as “not too bad”, getting moderated for it, then responding by posting a bad-faith outrage shitpost as a rebuttal, and trying to gaslight the other posters who saw right through that clear act of trolling.
