It’s a shame that the FA couldn’t do that with AFC Fylde.
I watched some matches of this crazy sport in Rio in 2016. As I had no expectations, I wasn’t prepared for what I saw. What a great evening I had. All the teams were great, but this french guy, Riyadh Sallem, played like Devil! Everybody, including me, wanted to take a photo with him.
Yes! Well done Lebanon for beating us. Must admit I’ve paid little attention to the Women’s WRC, there are a couple of teams that have been professional for years playing amateurs so it’s not really a mature professional nor an amateur competition at the moment. It’s very asymmetric. Like South Africa were beaten by a cricket score by England. That’s not worth watching. SA and some of the other teams will become competitive but probably will take two more WCs.
Lebanon (and Greece) owe their origins to Australians, so it is not the surprise it might seem that they are so good. So many South Seas teams are worth watching too.
You are right about the Rugby Union, when it gets beyond the group stage it will be more competitive – but I do applaud them for including the no-hopers, getting international exposure has got to be good for them (despite the discouragement).
Ireland defeat England in T20.
Yes it was rain affected and might have still been grabbed back but Ireland did the job in the conditions.
I haven’t seen the final attendance stats, but Audi field (capacity 20k) looked mostly full for the championship game. Not as big as Portland’s 22k semifinal, but significant progress.

Members of Galoucura, the so called main organized fan association of the Atlético Mineiro football team, broke through road blockades set up by supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro, who lost the lection last sunday.
The fans’ act probably took place on the BR-381 highway, while the group was traveling from Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais, towards São Paulo to watch the match between their beloved team and São Paulo Futebol Clube, scheduled for today at 9:30 pm at the Morumbi stadium in the Capital of the State of São Paulo.
More people need to come out with their stories of how abused their bodies were from playing pro-ball in general. It seems that playing in the NFL is far worse than other sports for specifically head injuries for a wider swath of players.
This documentary (I’m not sure if you can access it) is a horrible watch.
FIFA getting in the way of folks calling out sportswashing once again
The Lioness and England Women’s Player of the Year tells Woman’s Hour presenter Emma Barnett that Qatar hosting the FIFA World Cup is ‘disappointing’ and shows ‘no respect on a lot of levels’. Homosexuality can be punishable by death in the country.
The commentator is not alone in coming under fire for choosing to participate in this year’s World Cup. Robbie Williams and the Black-Eyed Peas have been criticised for agreeing to perform at the event, while David Beckham has received a huge backlash, particularly as a longtime public champion of LGBT rights, for performing an ambassadorial role for the Qataris, in a deal reported to have brought him £10 million ($11.4 million).
Neville has defended his former teammate Beckham, by pointing to the latter’s long-standing relationship with the Qataris.
“[People forget] Beckham went to play for PSG who had Qatari ownership,” he said.
“Beckham to be fair to him has a relationship with the Qataris through his relationship with PSG, and the work he has done in terms of amplifying our country through the world is probably second to none in the past five to 10 years.”
Congratulations, I think we just figured about how much a soul costs thanks to Becks.
Well he’s done a smashing job of using his relationship with Qatar to improve conditions there for LGBTQ people there…
…wait, he’s done fuckall for LGBTQ rights in Qatar!?!
It’s that time of year again, some real football played by the working class
Honourable mention:
Oh, and Carlisle got through by beating Tranmere Rovers. Hardly a shock since we beat them last Saturday too.
How are we playing this well in the middle of an injury crisis?
That’s exciting stuff! I wish we had that kind of league structure here in the US. So many excellent players from the college ranks play their last game at 22 or 23 and don’t really have anywhere to play other than pickup ball.
I guess in baseball, we have the minor leagues, but there isn’t really anything like that in other sports, is there?
