Ewwww…I just looked up some articles about prenatal nitrate exposure, and 2 things jumped out: increased risk of anencephaly, and thyroid ‘problems’.
It’s not stated very clearly, but if you read the full text you can see that they think that initial assessment was mistaken— it was a fetus, and one of the mutations led to premature growth plate closures.
