Gentleman who doesn't like government telling people what they can do likes government telling women they can't get an abortion

I feel like this is the third or fourth time ignorant right leaning people have been brought up recently, yet I feel like a specific point keeps getting missed.

From what I can see skimming through all the comments about logic and morals this is the only one that touches on the core nature of the man’s point of view. At best he doesn’t care about “you” and at worst he many actively hate “you”. I would wager to say the entire reason behind that is religion - when he dies he is not being judged by his peers but by his creator. If his god has laid out what is right or wrong then that is what he will try and follow. Just like DukeTrout’s video shows, that is now conveniently open to all sorts of interpretations (with specific points being pushed hard by his local pastor or preacher and all other ones completely ignored).

I’ve had similar circular illogical discussions with people I work with. Some of them are against abortion on moral grounds and do find capital punishment wrong as well, yet it’s high unlikely they would adopt a child. There is no changing this mentality, because when your viewpoint is that this world and your life is just a small part of a bigger journey then “others” or building of a cohesive understanding society just isn’t much of a priority. Perhaps banning or radically changing organized religion is a better solution.

I’m sorry to inform you from my own experience that many atheists hate me because I’m transgender. Religion isn’t the entire reason behind bigotry and hatred. Nor is it just directed towards my people. Misogyny is well documented among non believers- racism as well. And it’s simplistic and self congratulatory to paint it as solely the province of those you hate.

It also excuses that hatred and does nothing to help those experiencing that hatred.

I think you missed the point of the video and this whole discussion. It’s certainly not “religion = bad.” It’s more that religious belief, for better or worse, is based on non-evidenced doctrine; arguably, faith is antithetical to evidence. That makes religious doctrine inherently ill-suited to guiding public policy. Public policy must be guided by and refined by evidence.

They are conflicting systems.

Suggestion: if you are building off of someone else’s post, quote the relevant part before adding to it.

The above reads as if you think you’re the only sensible, rational poster in the thread, but you are so wise that you can recognize the glimmer of possible future understanding in one other poster, maybe.

Not at all intentional, I’m sure.

Well there was nothing to quote other than reposting or linking to the video. :person_shrugging:

That is the first time I’ve seen anyone directly point that out in the last 3 or 4 threads that have centered around illogical or dumb conservatives. The arguments in this thread that the man in the video is illogical are working from an entirely different perspective and framework than the man is. From a purely logical stand point the man is incredibly wrong, but taken from a faith based perspective the inconsistencies in his thoughts are handled by the inherent illogical nature of religion.

My only intention was to move one step past mocking this man for his beliefs and to point out that those types of beliefs come from certain places. Obviously not all people of faith are illogical or filled with hatred (the same as not all atheists are nice people). As it is frequently pointed out here, controlling women’s reproductive rights is a power trip. Power and control play a big part of many major religions as well.

Once again, he is talking about government intervention in people’s lives, which he does not want for himself, but is okay for others. So he must believe women do not deserve the same freedom that he does. Either women are people, or we’re incubators.

Are you aware that many of the posters here whom you are accusing of being disrespectful of people of faith are…you guessed it…people of faith themselves?

You do not speak for all people of faith. You won’t even listen to them, unless they agree with you.

Or regularly defend people of faith who are not bigoted assholes, for that matter…
