Going back to a mechanical keyboard turned me into a butterfingered idiot

Damnit. Now I’m looking at a 61 key Poker 3 with mx clear switches and hating myself. Ugh.

Is there a kit I should just buy instead?

Woohoo! Break out the toggle switches and punch cards!

Seriously though, I’m a drummer, and I treat keyboards about the same way. I know exactly where the keys are, and I bang at them with whatever fingers are handy. I’ve got a macbook that I try to treat nicely, but I plug a mechanical keyboard into it when I’m really going to town, because I will break things.

There are key samplers, such as this one for Cherry switches:

Twenty bucks but maybe you can get a lot of that back reselling it used. I wouldn’t be surprised if your more enthusiast-oriented brick & mortar electronics store keeps one around too.

One thing that @beschizza brought up which is deeply true – most people can leave the numeric keypad aside, yes, but arrow keys is another matter entirely. I suggest, unless you are a hardcore Unix-er, that you stick with models that have some kind of arrow key layout.

I also kind of like PgUp/PgDn, Home/End as well, which is why I am a fan of this layout:

This is some sort of off-brand Chinese atrocity, but it’s definitely mechanical and inexpensive and has backlighting (plus dip switches) – and it’s what I’d recommend for most people experimenting with compressed layouts rather than going whole hog.

I own one, and use it as my accessory keyboard to work on servers and stuff when I need to plug one in.

I’ve done this a number of times, but still like to old ADB Apple, beige keyboard the most. Currently I’m using DAS keyboards, expensive, but with the money. I require tactile feedback, and key noise to be really happy.

I’ve been avoiding making me-too posts in this thread, but me too. After years of using whatever was in front of me, last Christmas I asked Santa for a Cherry blue Das Keyboard and I couldn’t be happier with it. I may have the advantage of having already been a butterfingered idiot before I made the change, but it felt like going home.

OMG there are 40% keyboards. Why did I not know about this Planck keyboard before? Who’s been keeping this from me?
I’ve been deep down the rabbit hole on this one, folks. I’ve seen things.

I’ve been digging up how to hard wire keyboards and what diodes to use and it’s all too much but I can’t stop.

Ok. I think I’m going to go just a bit at a time. Likely a Pok3r to start (that’s an enormous 60% keyboard, mind you) before I fly completely off the deep end.
God help me.

Love that! Tho at least partly to the fact that it has a damn color. There’s too much dull-colored stuff everywhere these days. Give me some color! Rather some color clashes than being bored witless.
