Pretty sure the “Don’t be Evil” motto was from when Google was a private company. Since the IPO, they are now a publicly owned company and as such, shareholders run the show and have no truck with the previous era’s “don’t be evil” ideals. Shareholder’s motto for Google (and every other public company is) “do whatever makes us the most money the fastest”. The problem is bigger than Google.
Page and Brin control more than 50% of the vote. The company does whatever they want the company to do.
Thought. Why did not Wikileaks have their own mailserver for their people? For low loads these things can run on just about any box.
Using clouds (or any other third parties) is comfortable but unwise from the security point of view, and Wikileaks should itself be well aware of that. A mailserver physically located in a friendly jurisdiction can be set up in a day if you have the skills and did it recently, in a week if you have to start from scratch and read the docs.
Yes, that would mean that the government took private email records that have nothing to do with the alleged wrong doing.
