Most of the “ugly” produce is made into other products, like applesauce or soups, is frozen or canned, or goes to large commercial kitchens. And who knows if that cute apple gets eaten-it may well sit on a desk or counter, desiccating around its googly eyes.

For some reason heads of lettuce named Liz didn’t sell as well as the unnamed heads. Any items named Donald were only purchased by white cis-het men without a college degree.

I can confirm what Dr. Taber wrote.

Yes! Dr Sarah Taber is awesome and my favorite ag writer. Takes no bullshit and she really understands food production from the inside. If you live in North Carolina, make sure you vote for her for Ag Commissioner.

ETA: She was writing some pretty great stuff for Wonkette before beginning her campaign. Check it out!

  1. That was awesome and super educational, thank you.

  2. Holy FUCK is Twitter a horrible method of conveying detailed information, why did anyone ever think this was a good idea and how are people still using it in 2024.

You are more than welcome!

I also had to be V careful to make sure I didn’t repeat or skip any of those separate images she’d posted to tumblr.

Taber’s been an informative source. I enjoy her podcast and looking forward to her book.

However, last week or so some of y’all’ll remember that discussion over the relative value and importance of organic? She’s also where I gained a skepticism of organic farming, as she has multiple episodes detailling how organic farming can stick to definitions that make it harder to maintain dairy cows (they get slaughtered much more) or adapt regenerative farming methods from other societies.

She knows her stuff, but for those who have an interest in the topic, she’s a much more credible source than anything I can try and remember
