Green tea doesn't promote weight loss

I have a yoga teacher in my building at work who told me to wear green socks to treat my asthma (something something heart chakra/lungs something something).

I don’t go to her class.

i typically add cream to black tea, but never to green tea.

Yeah, unfortunately these health “stuides” are a dime a dozen going both ways these days. I never really give them any mind, i certainly don’t expect to lose weight from drinking green tea, but i would think it could be “part” of a larger overall strategy and is good for your health especially when compared to many beverages.

I think she might have pulled that tidbit out of her butt chakra!

Matcha tea is type of green tea that is higher in antioxidants and nutritional value than other types of green tea. There has been recent buzz surrounding matcha regarding scientifically-proven ability to support weight loss.

That page has a bunch a links to other similar pages, and a lovely photo of Gwyneth Paltrow, and only one link to an actual scientific study. And that study doesn’t support the claims in that article or the other blogs.

Animal and epidemiological studies suggest that green tea catechins may reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CHD). The health benefit of green tea has been attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; however, considerable evidence suggests that green tea and its catechins may reduce the risk of CHD by lowering the plasma levels of cholesterol and triglyceride. Although the mechanism underlying such effect of green tea is yet to be determined, it is evident from in vitro and in vivo studies that green tea or catechins inhibit the intestinal absorption of dietary lipids.

Which is a really remarkable finding and worthy of further study. I hope there are follow ups!

What’s funny is that artificially lowering one’s plasma levels of cholesterol makes it harder to lose weight. Since the fat just sits in adipose, instead of being released into the blood for further metabolism.

Green tea helps support weight loss, by being a substitute for black tea with sugar/cream, coffee with sugar/cream, soda, or adult beverages.

If you drink sweetened green tea you are drinking soda.

That’s why the gods also gave us tails. Some of us, anyway.

Amen! Save the Christmas for after Thanksgiving!
