I’ve always wondered at the perceived value of jewels; sure they’re nice to look at, but so is glass.
And holy shit can a glass blower do some amazing stuff with their medium.

A little disappointed I can’t apply Eddie Izzard’s bit about tea with the vicar. You know, about CAKE and DEATH.

There’s an episode of NOVA that’s pornography for rockhounds. I just saw an ad for the re-run about an hour ago. I’ll try to dig up a link, because if this episode doesn’t make you a convert, you are un-convert-able.

Mostly I’d prefer to get the gems closer to their natural state. I love those geodes and quartz crystals some folks find which either got some weird gold or some oxide running through the rock they’re seated in. It’s much prettier than some sparkly trinket.

The issue with glass is that it isn’t expensive.

Jewelry is meant to be and look expensive; people need to see that you spent money. The process is called Conspicuous consumption (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspicuous_consumption) and is the cornerstone of any “Court” based society. Marie Antoinette’s jewelry is the paramount example of this practice.

We still live in a court society despite anyones illusions otherwise.

One of my favorite examples of this sort of thing is the feather cloaks that were used by high-ranking chieftains in certain Pacific Island societies. Some were made exclusively of yellow feathers harvested from the chests of hummingbirds that only had a few of these feathers each.

I mean the concept might sound crazy… but if you saw someone wearing that thing you’d know that fucker was in charge.

Don’t worry, they didn’t kill the hummingbirds. It was a catch-and-release thing. (Easier to get more feathers that way.)
