So, kind of. Cars are largely safer from inside the box, but the increasing mass and hood height has made them substantially worse in the US, even as pedestrian deaths are falling the rest of the world due to safety rules.

We are worse on miles driven, but we are worse than most in deaths per VMT as well.That gap is getting pretty extreme when you compare to someone like the UK.
