Happy Mutants food and drink topic (Part 1)

The last paragraph in that article points out that vaccines make all the difference:

The medical team learned that although the Massachusetts student had received a first dose of the meningococcal vaccine, he never received the recommended booster. His roommate also ate the leftover food and vomited but didn’t have life-threatening reactions.

The Teen and I had burgers last night, so I made a grilled portobello mushroom with cheese and a fried egg roll for the vegetarian.

Thanks - our household philosophy is “there’s nothing that isn’t improved by sticking it between two pieces of bread.”

(And yes, I know that’s an open invitation for someone to post the Gordon Ramsey “idiot sandwich” gif. So be it.)

A fantastic segment from John Oliver.

I would disagree with him on both sides of the line.
Don’t come at my soup in a bread bowl, John. Especially creamy clam chowder in sourdough. The only reasons this isn’t the food of the gods is because they aren’t very creative.
Scotch Egg - yes, please!
Back bacon or crispy bacon - back bacon
Mushrooms or potatoes? Potatoes, but this is a case of, why not both?

Ummm, there are details missing. B. cereus doesn’t cause meningococcemia, N. meningitidis is not a food borne illness. The clinical course certainly sounds consistent with meningococcal sepsis. I suppose if someone spit in the rice, and was carrying N. meningitidis that might work, but overall, this story doesn’t entirely make sense. Tragic, but confusing.

As a person from where clam chowder be from.

My offense at this is deep. Pees in Carbonara deep.

Not that I know the difference but something didn’t sound right there. My assumption was some sort of misreporting. B. Cereus can cause meningitis, but the vaccine isn’t going to impact that.

Science reporting isn’t exactly great these days and USA today isn’t exactly the deep analysis news paper. It’s mostly aggregated material from wire services.

The source they link:

Is a “case challenge” column from NEJM, and the full article is pay walled. Meningococcemia is only mentioned in the poll at the bottom of the column.

So unless there’s something else in the full article, they either misquoted the diagnosis or connected it to the rice in error.

Recipe from here (excuse the sales pitch):

Looked like this

The flavour was fantastic - miso and gochujang go together so well - but I was hoping for something with more crunch, probably because it looks like fries, so the texture wasn’t a win. But the sauce of gochujang and lime juice… chef’s kiss

Ha! If it’s not a typo, makes me very skeptical about their opinions on clam chowder…I saw Fight Club…

Goodby old friend. 02/19/1996 to 02/27/2022.

You were always there for me. Dark stormy nights at the Mendocino cabin. Bright warm days grilling in San Francisco.
These last few days your cork disintegrated and fell inside and I had to strain out the pieces. This left you as an empty vessel of your former self.
You bottle will live forever stripped of its labels and refilled with only the best!
